Michael Kane - Worcester and Underhill, VT
« on: April 14, 2008, 05:57:07 PM »
I took your advice and tried out genealogybank and love it.  I do have a question about a Michael Kane who died in Underhill, Vt in October,1888.  The obit from Vermont stated he was buried in Worcester.  Then the Worcester Spy  on October 1, 1888 said he was  buried in St. John’s Cemetery and a former resident of Worcester.  He was the father of Owen Kane of Worcester.  Michael was born about 1807.  I saw a family in Leicster that looked as though it could include him.

Once in Vermont, he became the second husband to an Ann Barry, widow of Matthew Brewin who was the brother of my great great grandfather who settled in Marlborough but would go to church in Worcester in the late 1840's/early 1850's.  The Brewins and Barrys came from Leitrim.  Ann is buried with her first husband in the Irish Settlement Cemetery in Underhil, Vt.

There seemed to be a lot of travel back and forth between Underhill and Worcester that was revealed through the genealogybank articles.

I saw a great deal of information on genealogybank about two different Owen Kane's in Worcester about the 1888 time frame.  I can't quite figure out which one he was.

I am also interested if anyone knows if he had a marked grave in St. John's or any more about him.

Thank you.

FYI the first name Owen is interchangeable with Eugene, in case you come across any.

Ok, I'm back.....Found two Michael Kanes buried within a month of each other at St. John's in 1888.

Michael Kane purchased a burial plot on 09/12/1864 and he was buried in that lot on 09/30/1888.  Buried with him are Daniel J. Brosnihan 1913-1966, his wife Hazel E. Mara 1915-????, John A. Dee 1917-1978, and Ruth E Brosnihan 1915-1998.  Ruth appears to be John's wife.  Daniel was actually buried there on 08/16/1966, John Dee on 05/15/1978 and Ruth E.  on 08/29/1998.  The records do not show Hazel's burial but the headstone does.  The next of kin shown on the records was a Gail Brosnihan Walsh 255N. Road Unit 260 Chelmsford MA 01824  Section M,8,51 St Johns

The other Michael Kane I found was buried in a lot on 10/31/1888.  The lot was purchased on 10/06/1882.  There is no next of kin listed and I walked the section and could not find a headstone or marker.  Section Love,9,281 St. John's

Hope this has been of some help to you... :)

If your Owen Kane is the son in-law of the infamous Charlie O'Neil, then I believe you will find Owen's headstone in Section L, Row A at St. John's Cemetery. I would suggest getting the plot card for this location and maybe it will help you in making the connection to Michael.

Ckeck out the posts on Charlie O'Neil too.

Thank you all so much.  I found "Owen M. Kane" living on a farm in Underhill, Vt. in 1870 on the next page in the census to his father and his 2nd wife.  Owen's wife at that time was Ellen and they had one son Michael - 2/12's.  If he is the one who married Catherine O'Neill that would fit in with this being his second marriage.  A daughter(Mary B Kane) of Owen and Catherine died in 1907.  Also, it appears that a Mary Kane (daughter of Michael)  married a Timothy McGee in Leicester in 1866 - they seem to have had a large family that lived in Worcester and one son Timothy was a dentist.  At this point, I don't know if that Leicester family is the same as the one I am looking for.

I can't tell which Michael Kane is the one out of the two who died/were buried in 1888 at St. John's - but I doubt if someone is buried before they died so it would most likely be the later burial that year.

I can't get back on genealogybank as it seems to not be connecting tonight but there was one Owen Kane in Worcester who had marital troubles with his wife and there were a number of interesting stories about that.  Another Owen E. Kane Jr. inherited $73,000 from an uncle in Australia.

As an aside - other Worcester connections to Underhill, Vt. area:
Both Kanes  lived on one side of Mount Mansfield, Vt.  - also on that mountain were Thomas and Prudence Waugh who eventually left and went to Marlborough where his two brothers lived.  I think that Thomas Waugh came from Leitrim - some of his children later left Marlborough for Worcester .    A William Waugh Sr (Paxton/Holden) and William Waugh Jr. (Worcester) (m. to Catherine O'Brien from Bandon, Cork) also lived in this area before going to the Worcester area.  They also came from Leitrim.  Sometimes, they were Vaugh.

Thanks again.
