Durkin naturalization
« on: January 30, 2009, 03:59:26 AM »
Is anyone going to be at the WPL in the next few days to look up a naturalization record for me in the index?  James Durkin most likely worcester court (superior or county) between 1904-1910.  He was born circa 1880 in ireland so he would be 24-30 years old.  Residence Worcester.  If I get the book and page #, date of naturalization and which court house, I can direct this researcher to getting a copy.  He thinks Durkins are from Donnegal but all of the info on any Durkins I've seen has been from Sligo and Mayo.  Perhaps he'll ost on this board so we all can help them....Durkins from Tatnuck Square area.      Thanks!!!

Thanks! I know the second one isn't him...he was James J. Durkin.  If naturalization was in worcester, it might be him.

I believe they are from Sligo.  Saw a passenger list with him into Boston 15 April 1898 on board the Scythia.  Several parrengers away is a Bridget Durkin, which may be a sister. It stated they were on the way to Salem.  I checked the census for Salem in 1900 and found many people in Salem with the surname Durkin. I went on the LDS site to see if I could find a birth and found
17 June 1876 sligo ireland James Duran son of James Durkan and Honor McAvan.  also a bridget born to the same couple a few years earlier.

1900 census in Worcester I found James living with James Cawley and wife born c.1877 emigrated 1896 and listed as a cousin.

anyone want to add to this?

ME...
The 1910 census for Worcester shows my friend's grandfather, James Durkin, 28 with wife Annie (Boyle) 28 and dau. Mary 1. Census indicates James arrived in US in 1900, Annie in 1898. 28 years old would put his birth at 1882, however as you say, these dates can be off for many reasons, including a less than attentive census-taker.
The James J. Durkin shown in the 1900 census, cousin to and living in the household of James J. Cawley on Harrison St., certainly fits a scenario of him arriving in US in 1900 and not having a household of his own yet. James's birth date is given as June 1877 and this fits with the information you found on Familysearch.
Next challenge is to backtrack his trail into Ireland and see what can be found. Of interest is that James J's paternal grandmother was a Bridget (Walsh) Durkin. No indication that she or her husband emigrated from Ireland.
Thanks again for your good help.
Tom

WWI records for James Durkin of 66 Upsala St; wife Annie Josephine Durkin; Driver; DOB June 16, 1877.

James Durkin of 4 Goddard St. Naturalization record emailed to Tom.  No County listed.  DOB June 10, 1879.  Close enough for me.

Cheryl is that the 1902 naturalization that Helen found?  Is it the index info or the full record?  I'm interested in knowing if the passenger list date and the birth records and county jive with what I found.  This James Durkin's birth year went to 1880 and 1881 as he got older, which we knew is not untypical of irish immigrants.

Sorry for the delay.  Yes it was from 1902, just an index record.  I sent it to Tom.
